I am one week away from our first international festival trip of the year, and I am incredibly disorganized. The anxiety is sky-high. When it comes to travel and festival coverage I am the poster child Type-A organizer junkie. I find myself writing endless to-do lists, shopping lists and packing lists; schedules, shot lists, interview questions, schedules, checking and re-checking hotel, car, parking reservations. And right now I’m also sitting here with a seemingly impossible editorial schedule for the week and a reserve of unedited show photos from Saturday’s Frost Fest (an entirely kickass show, btw…). This may figuratively and literally break the camel’s back. There. Is. SO. MUCH. TO. DO.
Keep it together.
Is 10am too early to crack open my emergency Cabernet Sauvignon and sip my woes into calm reserve? Probably. I realize I shouldn’t complain but the logistics of #mylifeRN all too easily send me into a bit of a tailspin. I am entirely sure I’m not the only one with woes like this.
So how do you deal? What are your survival mechanisms when life gets a little too hectic?
I have two; the holy To Do List… and my reliable mantra; “one foot in front of the other.” When people ask how I manage to fit so much into my schedule, I tell them this: you can accomplish a lot if you break it down into small pieces, write a to-do list and then get to work. Chip away; a piece at a time, one step at a time. It's about organizing the insurmountable into bits you can do. Combat a big, overwhelming project by turning it in to ten small, simple tasks.
I have a secret weapon here, and it’s entirely free. I use a note-taking app that integrates seamlessly across all of my technology. It is absolutely my saving grace and the only reason I can stay on top of everything. I’m loyal to OneNote** these days, but there are several similar apps available. It’s great because it updates automatically between my iPhone, desktop and laptop. I can jot down story ideas or to-do’s on my phone while I’m waiting in line at the grocery store. With peace of mind that it’s written down, because we all know that the busier you are, the more crazy forgetful you are. Then I head home, pull up those notes on my desktop and get working on that story. Later, when I’m sitting at a coffee shop, those notes are synced to my laptop too, so I can sit and enjoy my vanilla latte while I am reminded of all the other to dos that I forgot to do last week. I can’t tell you how convenient and useful it is. Google docs** are also very useful and I’m a Google calendar** junkie as well (**none of these are sponsored).
It gets a little insane, of course, when I’ve got to do lists for our website, our Editorial Calendar, social media, each individual show, festival, trip and feature, photography projects, travel, interviews and of course my own real normal life stuff. My other affirmation sits squarely in this gorgeous little meme. And it’s so very true. Just take one little step toward that goal… and then another, and another. And then you find yourself standing at the top of the mountain, looking back, wondering how you go there.
But it’s still a tough deal when there’s a lot to accomplish. I am not immune to the overwhelm of a big task at hand, or just to find myself crumbling over an insurmountable to do list. And right now, that list is crazy and I'm questioning my sanity. But that's okay because I've got memes up to my eyeballs and my OneNote app is doing overtime.
My only solace? Once I’m through this whirlwind, I’ll be hopping on a plane bound for Grand Cayman Island with a camera, some flip flops and an adventures to do list that’s probably too long to actually accomplish (oh yes, there's a list for that in my app... don't look at me like that). A new type of whirlwind. Team dRiFFt is there for a full week to soak in the scene, meet some locals and explore the island. Friday and Saturday (Feb 15-16) is the long awaited, much-anticipated inaugural Kaaboo Cayman festival held on 7-mile beach, tucked in between stunning tropical resorts and the incredible nature and diversity of one of the Caribbean’s finest islands. We are beyond excited and can't wait to share the experience with you. I do hope you'll follow along here and on our social media. It's going to be an incredible week.
Until next time, Keep Calm and write that To-Do List...
